I’m Daniel Rotsztain, the Urban Geographer,&#38;nbsp;an artist, writer, and cartographer based between Toronto/Tkaronto, Ontario, Canada and Ithaca, New York. My multidisciplinary work examines our relationships to the places we inhabit.
As a lover of communal spaces like public libraries, malls, and strip malls, my projects also seek to understand and support the diverse settings of the city’s public life. As a geographer of European descent working on Turtle Island, I am committed to understanding and sharing the treaties and Wampum Belts that outline our roles and responsibilities toward this land and its people.
A few highlights:

I’m the author and illustrator of All the Libraries Toronto, a colouring book featuring every branch of Toronto Public Library and&#38;nbsp;A Colourful History Toronto, a collaboration with the City of Toronto featuring the city’s historic sites.

My work has also been published in the Globe and Mail, Now Magazine, Toronto Life, New York Magazine, and Spacing Magazine, and my past clients include the City of Toronto, Heritage Toronto, ERA Architects, the Toronto Board of Trade, and the Canada Council of the Arts. I’ve had&#38;nbsp;a semi-regular column on CBC Radio exploring the Greater Toronto Area.
I’m also the co-founder and Executive Director of&#38;nbsp;plazaPOPS, a project to enhance strip mall parking lots to become vibrant public spaces.
Since 2023, I have taught “Designing the Peripheral City”, a Masters of Urban Design seminar at the University of Toronto’s Daniels School of Architecture, Landscape Architecture, and Urban Design.&#38;nbsp;
Check out my writing, illustration, cartography and other projects, and don’t hesitate to get in touch if you need an urban geographer for your next project!

		<description>CARTOGRAPHY&#38;nbsp;

Illustrated maps provide a playful and engaging way to tell the stories of the places they represent, balancing whimsy and way-finding functionality. My maps have been used for music festivals, public programs, academic projects, personal mementos and more.
 I also do custom illustrated maps, a perfect gift for a birthday, anniversary, or move.
Check out some of my past map work and contact me to talk cartography for your next project!&#38;nbsp;ENCAMPMENT SUPPORT NETWORKThe Housing Crisis is a Real Estate Game&#38;nbsp;
I worked with the Encampment Support Network’s “explainers committee” to develop an interactive map demonstrating how the so-called housing crisis is the result of a web of interconnected policies and deeply embedded societal values prioritizing real estate and private property over the wellbeing of all.&#38;nbsp;

COACH HOUSE BOOKSAny Night of the Week Maps
These maps were illustrated to accompany Jonny Dovercourt’s ode to Toronto music history, Any Night of the Week published by Coach House Books, and a podcast series of the same name. The book documents Toronto's music scene with its Yonge Street origins and its gradual move west (maps 1 to 3) while the podcast explores music’s role in neighbourhoods across the city (maps 3 to 6). The venues included span from legendary to almost forgotten, but all contributed to the city we know and love today.

THE GRIND MAGAZINEFord’s Biggest FlopsFor the Grind Magazine’s 2025 provincial election issue, I mapped an (incomplete) list of Doug Ford’s biggest flops, spatializing the endless incompetence, corruption, kick backs, delays, preferential treatments, and straight up evil that has characterized Ontario politics since 2018.

CITY OF TORONTOCultural Loops Guide
For the City of Toronto’s Cultural Hotspots initiative, I illustrated maps for the North York Cultural Loops Guide (2016), the East Toronto Cultural Loops Guide (2018), and the York Cultural Loops Guide (2019) (maps 1 to 4). The guides encourage Torontonians to explore the ecology, history and culture of neighbourhoods outside the downtown core. Building off this initiative, the City of Toronto’s My City My 6 project was a series of resident-submitted six word poems evoking the feeling of life in Toronto, with exhibits across the city illustrated in map 5. &#38;nbsp;

CARTOGRAMSReimagining Geographies
While we navigate with apps like Google Maps to go as quickly as possible from point A to point B, the way we conceive of space is more subjective and emotional, placing more emphasis on places we know and have connections and exaggerating them in our conception of space.&#38;nbsp;
These maps attempt to express that subjective scale, closer to how we actually experience and navigate place.&#38;nbsp;

		<description>ILLUSTRATION
Like cartography, illustrations are a great wayto communicate complex ideas with a few simple, bold lines. I’ve done illustrations for the Canada Council for the Arts, the City of Toronto, the Toronto Board of Trade, ERA Architects, the Globe and Mail and Spacing Magazine, and more.

Enjoy this selection of my work and contact me to discuss illustrations for your next project!
LUMINATOToronto Tomorrow: Colouring the Future of Housing
For Luminato’s 2024 edition, I designed, co-wrote, and illustrated an interactive colouring book that was distributed throughout the festival. Housing Illustrations&#38;nbsp;While my illustration’s simple, clean linework is inspired by architectural blueprints, I forgoe the ruler to achieve a handdrawn quality that gives the illustrations character while emphasizing distinctive architetural features. My building drawings have been used by academics, architects, and not-for-profits in reports, journal articles, and blogposts.&#38;nbsp;

ERA ARCHITECTSTower Renewal RAC ZoneFor ERA Architects’ Tower Renewal Initiative, I my illustrations demonstrated the potential of the new RAC (residential-apartment-commerical) zone. The new zoneallows Toronto’s suburban high rise neighbourhoods to activate the under-used spaces between structures for markets, gardens, health and food services, and other entrepreneurial activities. See the RAC zone website for more details and illustrations.

Spacing Magazine: 20 People we Love&#38;nbsp;I was featured in Spacing Magazine’s list of “20 People we Love” as part of their 20th Anniversary issue in December, 2023. It was an honour to be included on a list featuring a wide range of artists, activists, planners, and organizers that have contributed so much to the city!

Social Distance MachineWhen COVID-19 first hit Toronto, we were asked to keep 2 metres between each other, but there was hardly enough space on the sidewalks to do so. As part of the Toronto Public Space Committee, Bobby Gadda and I created the “Social Distancing Machine”, showcased via a humourous video to demonstrate the lack of space for pedestrians while advocating for the City to close streets to cars to facilitate physical distancing. #KeepthePillarsTOIn an effort to save a beautiful remnant of the city’s concrete heritage, I started a petition to preserve the semi-circle of pillars leftover from the removal of the York Street off-ramp. Unsuccessful, I collaborated with Zoë Abrams to produce The Pillars Picnic, a multi-disciplinary music and arts fest set amongst the pillars.

ON THE RADIO

February 2015Monocle 24 Radio, The UrbanistI speak with Angela Shackel on the experience of taking the ferry to the Toronto Islands - a fantastic experience of watching the city recede into an electric mass, toward the wild forests and little villages of the Islands. January 2015CBC Radio One, Toronto, SparkI talk to host Nora Young about a phenomenon I’ve experienced amongst my friends: the rise of “digital peasantry”. Veronica Simmonds produced the piece and interviewed a close friend. Beyond the analogy, Veronica exposes the real physical labour associated with the production of technology. Listen here.

August 2012News 95.7, Halifax, Maritime MorningInterview about the possibility of a 3rd harbour bridge in Halifax, and why this would lead to more congestion on the Halifax Peninsula. I propose that we think of “mobility” rather than public transit versus cars. Listen here.

August 2011CIUT 88.1 FM, Halifax, HabitatInterview with Veronica Simmonds about my Fuller Lecture, where I explore why cities are natural, and how that shifts the conversation of environmentalism toward social justice.IN PHOTOS

On CapersMay 11, 2015Trampoline Hall, The Garrison, TorontoI explore my past through the lense of my pickiness - as a child, I wouldn’t eat anything I didn’t trust. And what’s less trust worthy than Capers? Nobody even knows what they are! A humorous account of my childhood and how one thing can be two things.

All the Libraries TorontoApril 9, 2015Nerd Nite Toronto, TRANZACMy first presentation of my journey to visit and illustrate all 100 branches (and two bookmobiles) of the Toronto Public Library. Carolinia, Toronto’s Bioregion June, 2013Urban Ecologies Conference, OCADu, TorontoAttended by academics, artists, planners, arborists and architects, the Urban Ecologies Conference brought together leaders in the field of city building who acknowledge that cities are organism, and sustainability must start from that point. I presented my research on Carolinia, Toronto’s Bioregion, arguing that a bioregional approach would emphasize ecology in Toronto’s identity.

The Nature of Things: Everything is EverythingAugust, 2011Fuller Terrace Lectures Series, Halifax As part of this backyard lecture series, I delivered a talk called Everything is Everything. Based on research I had done for my thesis, the talk was my first artistic departure from academia. I explore this history of the concept of nature, how cities are natural, and how that shifts the conversation of environmentalism toward social justice. Watch it here, and see the animated GIFs here.
